WHY IS SELF-LOVE IMPORTANT?
How we love and treat ourselves helps set the standard of how others will love and treat us. If people see us picking out flaws or talking poorly about ourselves, we aren't showing them how to respect or appreciate us. I'm not saying it condones negative behaviour by others, it absolutely doesn't, it's just that if we don't love ourselves first and foremost, we can't set the example of our expectations and stand up for ourselves when not treated properly. LOVE YOURSELF AS MUCH AS YOU WANT OTHERS TO.
Self-love also plays a major role in a healthy lifestyle. When we love and respect our body, we not only appreciate it, we treat it better because we want to nourish it. We're more aware of what we put into and onto our bodies and we have an active lifestyle. Self-love is detrimental in a joyful and fulfilled life.
BENEFITS OF SELF-LOVE
Self-love and gratitude can have a positive impact on every aspect of your life. When we love ourselves unconditionally we're able to make decisions based on what will serve us best, but when we don't, we make decisions out of fear or insecurities. A few benefits of self-love are:
- Self confidence is higher
- Improves mental and physical health/strength
- Decreases stress and anxiety
- And so much more!
HOW TO IMPROVE SELF-LOVE
Everyone gives and receives love differently, so I definitely recommend trying a few things out to see what works best for you. To improve your self-love here are a few things you could try today:
- Write yourself a letter forgiving yourself of anything you feel guilty for or that is weighing you down
- Smile at yourself every time you see your reflection (it may sound silly but it feels good and is a mood booster for me!)
- Eliminate negative self talk or criticism
- Write out all of the things you love about yourself and why (not just physically)
- Listen to a self-love meditation (Here's a 5 minute self-love meditation example)
- Set time aside for yourself (nature walk, bath, read, journaling etc.)
- Use positive affirmations (Positives affirmation for self-love samples)
